Sunsetting a Legacy Master Data Management System

Transitioning a national retail company to a new MDM system to optimize data management

Opportunity

A national retail company was incurring cost increases due to duplicate customer records in their Marketing Cloud, while also supporting a legacy Master Data Management (MDM) system. The company was embarking on a strategy to sunset the current MDM and move to a more scalable, flexible and leading-edge solution and related technologies.

Solution

Leveraging its in-depth experience in Master Data Management, Pepper Foster worked closely with internal sponsors and stakeholders to assess the current state, identify and design a comprehensive solution that leveraged existing platforms and technologies, and achieve buy-in and approval.  In addition to driving the solution design, Pepper Foster also identified and assessed third party vendors to add value and augment existing infrastructure and worked across functional groups on project planning, implementation (Agile) and communications.

Outcome

The team was able to:

  • Merge approximately 1 million duplicate records using a third party vendor application
  • Define/optimize processes that will identify and merge duplicate records in real-time going forward
  • Migrate data associated with 13 million customers and 30 million assets from their legacy MDM to the new application platform
  • Design and implement a leading-edge event driven bridge solution for ongoing data management

This apparent contradiction is not a flaw in the data but a fundamental insight into the current maturity of the market...
Right at the bottom of the NY Times Dealbook email that went out to subscribers on Saturday August 16 there was a small, almost throwaway piece about some surveys on AI adoption and ROI in business. The survey results show that AI is on the same trajectory as Dot Com was back in the late nineties.
